Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy, for emotional, behavioural and relationship problems

Monthly sessions in North Bridge

A good counsellor will promote a secure relationship of attachment with their clients: In 1988, Dr John Bowlby wrote that "...unless a counsellor or therapist can enable his/her clients to feel some measure of security, counselling and therapy cannot even begin.  Thus we start with the role of the therapist providing a secure base".  And a secure base is provided by the counsellor being emotionally available, attentive, and sensitive to the client's needs; and engaged in a collaborative attempt to help the client make real progress in his or her life.

Introduction

a-slightly-younger-jimHello and welcome to my Face-to-face counselling page for people in and near Edinburgh.

Do you feel unhappy about any aspect of your life?  Are you feeling emotionally miserable, or acting in ways that damage your own interests?  Do you feel an urgent and desperate need for help with your problems?

♣  Are you looking for help with emotional, behavioural or relationship problems?

♣  Do you feel angry, anxious, stressed or depressed?

♣  Are you feeling miserable about the problems in your life?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then I can help you.

Counselling helps people to solve their problems of daily living: Professional counselling psychologists do not assume that their clients are suffering from some kind of ‘pathology', but rather from the ordinary human difficulties that are "part and parcel of the human condition": "At the heart of this philosophy is a belief that the therapeutic relationship involves working towards an authentic meeting of equals and has the intention of enhancing the self-determination and fulfilment of potential of the person in the client role".

Strawbridge and Woolfe, 2003, Counselling Psychology in Context, page 11. (17)

Who am I, and what do I offer?

My name is Dr Jim Byrne.  I am a Doctor of Counselling. Over the period since 1998, I have helped more than 650 people to get over their problems of anger, anxiety, rage, depression, stress, panic attacks, low self-esteem, poor self confidence, and/or relationship problems including couple conflict. My clients find that they can get over their urgent and immediate problems in just three or four sessions with me. Of course, some clients need more time than that, especially if they have multiple problems. (See the 'Unsolicited Client Testimonials' page***).

Barcelo-Edinburgh.jpgI offer face-to-face counselling, coaching and therapy services in Edinburgh, on the first Thursday of each month.  You can then consult me by telephone at intervals between our face to face session. Please see the Telephone Counselling page.***

Our meetings would be in a private room at the Barceló Edinburgh Carlton Hotel, North Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1SD, which is a two minute walk from Waverley Railway Station.

Because I am only in Edinburgh once each month, and because of the high overhead costs, it is necessary to book a triple session - which is three times 45 minute sessions, at £175 per session.  Thus the total cost to you would be £525 per month.  This fee must be paid into the ABC bank account and cleared seven days before the appointment is due to take place.

I am a fully trained and accredited cognitive-emotive-narrative therapist (REBT/CBT/CENT). (See the 'Accreditation and Ethics' page***).

I offer general counselling help with emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties; and also in seven areas of specialism***.

I provide a unique form of ‘talk therapy', or cognitive counselling (including elements of CBT), which combines the best systems of effective thinking, re-deciding, re-parenting, psychological education, social skills training, and emotional support.  This system is called Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy, or CENT counselling.

Counselling-relationship.jpgWhat is the structure of a counselling session?

A standard counselling/therapy session in Edinburgh is a 135 minute conversation, which is confidential between us. (I would never breach my pledge of confidentiality, unless a client told me they planned to commit a serious crime, and that has never happened in more than thirteen years of doing this work). During those sessions, through a process of discussion, debate and direct teaching/training/coaching/counselling, I use Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy (CENT) to help my clients to feel better; to act better; to think better; and to function better in their home and work relationships and performances.

What will you get?

If you come to see me, I will help you to reframe your problems - to look at them and think about them differently - so that they look and feel more manageable, easier to solve; and less distressing or difficult.

I will introduce you to new ways of thinking/feeling about your unresolved problems in life, including early childhood problems, or problems from later stages in your life; and I will help you to feel better about who you are and how you behave and perform in the world.

happy-family3.jpgIf you enter into CENT counselling with me, you can expect to learn how to think better; feel better and perform and behave better, at home and at work.

If you are angry, anxious or depressed, you can expect to reduce the intensity of those emotions to a more reasonable level; which will improve how you feel; how you act; and the general quality of your life.  Happiness can return to your life.

If you are struggling with conflict or disturbances in your relationships, you can expect to learn how to manage effective relationships for productive outcomes.

If you are struggling with practical problems in your life, you can expect to gain the skills to plan and implement your goals more effectively.

Fees

Because I am only in Edinburgh once each month, and because of the high overhead costs, it is necessary to book a triple session - which is three times 45 minute sessions, at £175 per session.  Thus the total cost to you would be £525 per month.  This fee must be paid into the ABC bank account and cleared seven days before the appointment is due to take place.  You can reduce your average fee significantly, if you also sign up for telephone counselling, because telephone counselling is much less expensive.

"If you think counselling is expensive, try self-neglect!" Anonymous.
