Good enough counsellors provide a healing relationship for their counselling clients:
How can counselling relationships help the client to grow and have better relationships in the real world? "In
the world according to Bowlby, our lives, from the cradle to the grave, revolve around intimate attachments. Although
our stance toward such attachments is shaped most influentially by our first relationships, we are also malleable. If
our early involvements have been problematic, then subsequent relationships can offer second chances, perhaps affording us
the potential to love, feel, and reflect with the freedom that flows from secure attachment. (Counselling and) psychotherapy,
at its best, provides just such a healing relationship".

Who am I, and what do I offer?
My name is Dr Jim Byrne. I am a Doctor of Counselling. Over the past thirteen years, I have helped more than 650 people
to get over their problems of anger, anxiety, panic, rage, depression, stress, low self-esteem and poor self confidence, and/or
relationship problems, including couple conflict. My clients often find that they can get over their urgent and immediate
problems in just three or four sessions with me. Of course, some more complicated cases take longer. (See the 'Unsolicited Client Testimonials' page***).
I offer face-to-face counselling, coaching and therapy services
in central York on a monthly basis; on the second Thursday of each month. If you want to consult me then we would meet
in in a private room in the The Royal York Hotel, Station Road, YO24 1AA, which is adjacent to York Railway Station.
Because
I am only in York once each month, and because of the high overhead costs, it is necessary to book a double
session - which is two times 45 minute sessions, at £150 per session. Thus the total cost to you would be £300
per month. This fee must be paid into the ABC bank account and cleared seven days before the appointment is due to take
place.
I offer general counselling help with emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties; and also in seven areas of specialism***.
I provide a unique form of ‘talk therapy', or cognitive counselling (including elements of CBT), which
combines the best systems of effective thinking, re-deciding, re-parenting, psychological education, social skills training,
and emotional support. This system is called Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy, or CENT counselling.
What is the structure of a counselling session?
A standard session in York is a 90 minute conversation, which is confidential between us. (I would never breach my pledge
of confidentiality, unless a client told me they planned to commit a serious crime, and that has never happened in more than
thirteen years of doing this work). During those sessions, through a process of discussion, debate and direct teaching/training,
I use Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy (CENT) to help my clients to feel better; to act better; to think better; and to
function better in their home and work relationships and performances.

What will you get?
If you come to see me, I will help you to reframe your problems - to look at them and think about them differently - so that
they look and feel more manageable, easier to solve; and less distressing or difficult.
I will introduce you to new
ways of thinking/feeling about your unresolved problems in life, including early childhood problems, or problems from later
stages in your life, including the present moment; and I will help you to feel better about who you are how you behave and
perform in the world.
If you enter into CENT counselling with me, you can expect to learn how to think better; feel
better and perform and behave better, at home and at work.
If you are angry, anxious or depressed, you can expect to reduce the intensity of those emotions to a more reasonable level;
which will improve how you feel; how you act; and the general quality of your life. Happiness can return to your life.
If
you are struggling with conflict or disturbances in your relationships, you can expect to learn how to manage effective relationships
for productive outcomes.
If you are struggling with practical problems in your life, you can expect to gain the skills
to plan and implement your goals more effectively.
Fees

If you also sign up for telephone counselling, you can reduce your average fee significantly, since telephone counselling is much less expensive.
