Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy, for emotional, behavioural and relationship problems
A
good counselling experience should be flexible and allow the client to pursue their goals: "The term ‘counselling'
includes work with individuals and with relationships, which may be developmental, crisis support, psychotherapeutic, guiding
or problem solving ... The task of counselling is to give the client an opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways
of living more satisfyingly and resourcefully".
BAC, 1984, cited in McLeod, 2003. (6)

"Counselling denotes a professional relationship between a trained counsellor and a client. This
relationship is usually person-to-person, although it may sometimes involve more than two people. It is designed to
help clients to understand and clarify their views of their lifespace, and to learn to reach their self-determined goals through
meaningful, well-informed choices and through resolution of problems of an emotional or interpersonal nature".
Burks and Steffire, 1979. Quoted in McLeod, 2003, page 7.
Who
am I, and what do I offer?
My name is Dr Jim Byrne. I am a Doctor of Counselling. Over the past thirteen
years and more, I have helped more than 650 people to get over their problems of anger, anxiety, rage, depression, stress,
low self-esteem, and/or relationship problems including couple conflict. My clients find that they can get over their urgent
and immediate problems in just three or four sessions with me. (See the 'Unsolicited Client Testimonials' page***).
I offer face-to-face counselling, coaching and therapy services in Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK. I am
a fully trained and accredited cognitive-emotive-narrative therapist (REBT/CBT/CENT). (See the 'Accreditation and Ethics' page***).
I offer general counselling help with emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties; and also in seven areas of specialism***.
I provide a unique form of ‘talk therapy', or cognitive counselling (including elements of CBT), which
combines the best systems of effective thinking, re-deciding, re-parenting, psychological education, social skills training,
and emotional support. This system is called Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy, or CENT counselling.
Location
Face to face counselling sessions are held
in Halifax on Saturdays:
♣ In the Consulting Room, above Food Therapy, 11 Northgate, Halifax, HX1 1UR.
You
can also consult me:
♣ In Hebden Bridge, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
A standard session is a 45 minute
conversation, which is confidential between us. (I would never breach my pledge of confidentiality, unless a client told me
they planned to commit a serious crime, and that has never happened in more than thirteen years of doing this work). During
those sessions, through a process of discussion, debate and direct teaching/training, I use Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy
(CENT) to help my clients to feel better; to act better; to think better; and to function better in their home and work relationships
and performances. Mainly I do that by teaching them how to change their own attitudes of mind; to learn how to 'reframe'
their problems so they do not show up as major burdens; and to complete their experience of undigested material from their
past history.
What will you get?
If you come to see me, I will help you to get rid
of your unpleasant, distressing emotional pain, and your unhelpful behaviours.
I will do this partly by
teaching you how to reframe your problems - to look at them and think about them differently - so that they look and feel
more manageable, easier to solve; and less distressing or difficult.
I will introduce you to new ways of thinking/feeling
about your unresolved problems in life; and I will help you to feel better about who you are how you behave and perform in
the world.
If you enter into CENT counselling with me, you can expect to learn how to think better; feel better and
perform and behave better, at home and at work.
If you are angry, anxious or depressed, you can expect to reduce the
intensity of those emotions to a more reasonable level; which will improve how you feel; how you act; and the general quality
of your life. Happiness can return to your life.
If you are struggling with conflict or disturbances in your relationships,
you can expect to learn how to manage effective relationships for productive outcomes.
If you are struggling with practical
problems in your life, you can expect to gain the skills to plan and implement your goals more effectively.
