Dr Jim Byrne offers training, supervision, research ideas, information on REBT, and recommended books.
Option 4 of ABC Services: Training, supervision, REBT Information,
research information, and recommended books
The following
services - and/or information - are available on this website:
1.
Counselling and therapy training:
The ABC Coaching Academy was formally established in
2001, to provide high quality, low cost training in cognitive therapy related subjects, including Rational Emotive Behaviour
Therapy training by distance learning and face to face. Over the past eight years, Dr Jim Byrne has provided distance
training courses in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavioural Counselling to students in various parts of the
world.
Plans for 2010: A new ABC Certificate in REBT is being planned; along with a Certificate
in CENT; and some component modules of a Diploma in CENT.
To commemorate the second anniversary of the death of Dr Albert Ellis, the creator of Rational Emotive Behaviour
Therapy (REBT), Dr Jim Byrne has produced a set of informational pages outlining the theory, philosophy and practice of REBT.
Many counsellors (though
by no means a majority) are naturally concerned to understand the basis of their theories and practices, as presented in the
literature of the profession. The function of counselling research is to improve counselling and therapy practice.
5. Books for personal and professional development:
Reading is a crucially important part of
continuing professional development for counsellors and therapists; and bibliotherapy (or learning therapy ideas from
books) is a very effective way for individuals to become their own counsellors, by reading some of the best ideas in
circulation, without having to pay a high price for this knowledge. Brian Tracy, and American business coach, once argued
that 80% of all the best books that are sold each year are bought by 20% of the population, and thus knowledge is unevenly
spread across any population. Furthermore, if you were to read one book per week for the next three years, you would be among
the top 5% of educated individuals on this planet. That's truly shocking. Books are a treasure trove of ideas, attitudes,
values and concepts.
What are the best books for counsellors and therapists to read? And what about their
clients' reading needs? And reading material for individuals who want to improve their understanding of their own
thinking, emotions and behaviours? That would be a huge project, constructing such a list, or lists. I have begun a humble
attempt to list some interesting contributions to such a list. You can always suggest additions...
