INTRODUCTION
Hello and welcome to my website.
Are you looking for help
with emotional, behavioural or relationship problems?
Do you feel angry, anxious or
depressed?
Are you feeling miserable about the problems in your life?
If you answered 'Yes' to any of those questions, then I can help you.
My name is Dr Jim Byrne, and I've helped hundreds of individuals from all walks of life to achieve happier,
more successful lives, for more than ten years now. I offer face-to-face counselling, coaching and therapy services in Hebden
Bridge and Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK. I am a fully trained and accredited cognitive-emotive-narrative therapist (REBT/CBT/CENT).
(See the 'Accreditation and Ethics' page).
My clients find that they can get over their
problems in just three or four sessions with me. (See the 'Client Testimonials' page).
WHAT IS A SESSION?
A session is a 45 minute conversation, which is confidential between
us. (I would never breach my pledge of confidentiality, unless a client told me they planned to commit a serious
crime, and that has never happened in more than ten years of doing this work). During those sessions, through a process of
discussion, debate and direct teaching/training, I use Cognitive Emotive Narrative Therapy (CENT) to help my clients to feel
better; to act better; to think better; and to function better in their home and work relationships and performances.
If you enter into CENT counselling with me, you can expect to learn
how to think better; feel better and perform and behave better, at home and at work.
If
you are angry, anxious or depressed, you can expect to reduce the intensity of those emotions to a more reasonable level;
which will improve how you feel; how you act; and the general quality of your life.
If
you are struggling with conflict or disturbances in your relationships, you can expect to learn how to manage effective relationships
for productive outcomes.
If you are struggling with practical problems in
your life, you can expect to gain the skills to plan and implement your goals more effectively.
A Recent Client Testimonial
♣ "Hi Jim, Thank you for teaching me your Six Windows Model,
and sending the Confidence Book. I now see my life much more as an interesting set of challenges, rather than an impossible
mess. The Six Windows Model is a powerful tool for changing the appearance of my world. Everything looks and feels
so much more manageable and controllable. Thanks again." B.B.G., Bradford, West Yorkshire. (Two sessions
of face-to-face counselling for low frustration tolerance and stress).
"Hi
Jim, Thanks for all your help with my relationship problems. Tricia and I are now back together, and very much in love.
Your ideas on how to manage a healthy sex-love relationship proved to be positively revolutionary. I am so grateful
to you for helping to put my life back together". C.J., Halifax. (Three sessions of face-to-face counselling,
and one telephone counselling session).
In this manual, I want to do two things: (1) To present a basic understanding of the Rational-Emotive
Behaviour Therapy (REBT) approach to dealing with anxiety’; and (2) To provide a set of exercises for you to do so that
you can learn how to analyze your problems with anxiety; identify solutions; and implement those solutions so as to eliminate
your anxiety. In that way, you can become your own “counsellor”, in the area of anxiety and fear, because you
can learn to fix your own emotional and behavioural problems.
Distinguishing
Anxiety and Concern
In Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), we distinguish between
helpful and unhelpful negative emotions, and show our clients how to get rid of their unhelpful negative
emotions. We are not aiming to produce “unemotional” individuals, but rational, calm individuals who have a full
range of emotions appropriate to the events in their lives, which help them to focus on their objectives and to come to terms
with the facts of their lives. So if you are facing a threat or danger, it’s a good idea to be reasonablyconcerned
about it. Concern will help you to deal with the impending problem. But anxiety will disrupt your
thinking and behaviour.
